Case Study – Olam
Olam is a leading global food and agri-business company, operating from seed to shelf in 70 countries, supplying food and industrial raw materials to over 23,000 customers worldwide. Olam is one of the world’s largest suppliers of cocoa beans and products, coffee, cotton and rice.
Knowing that their sustainability data would have to come from thousands of suppliers, encompassing everything from single farms to multinational crop corporations meant that there was no simple answer to how they were going to collate and manage their sustainability data. They knew they wanted to be the best in the industry and that they wanted to put their commitment to sustainability front and centre, but they didn’t know how to put that plan into action.
SustainIt’s first challenge was to address the engagement problem. Olam thought their commitment to sustainability was from the top down, but we knew that for any sustainability project to succeed you need all stakeholders to be really engaged – if there’s no push from the bottom then the pull from the top has to work a lot harder.
Collaborating with a network across the Olam organisation, SustainIt were able to build a Requirements Specification that addressed strategic aspirations as well as managing the actual day to day detail and reporting. Structural requirements, key data objectives and a network of data suppliers that would have to be connected with were all researched and defined. Once that was established then the right software was sourced with the right fit for the organisation.
To ensure sustainability drives change, Olam realised that they needed everyone on board with the project. By engaging with key stakeholders SustainIt were able to understand ALL the requirements that Olam needed and therefore really ensure that narrowing down the selection of software vendors to find the right fit was achieved. Olam finally selected an Enablon solution to be configured to their specific requirements and manage all their disparate data collection challenges.
