Case Study – West of England Carbon Challenge

SUPPORTING PIECES

The Challenge

The West of England Carbon Challenge supports organisations in the region to reduce their emissions in line with national targets. It challenges all businesses, public and third sector bodies to commit to making an annual cut in emissions for four years to reach a cumulative total of at least 10% by 2012/13.

The Solution

As a key sponsor and as part of our community investment programme SustainIt provided a  web based environmental management solution that could be configured to provide a way for West of England organisations to measure, manage, reduce and report on their environmental impact and carbon footprint.  The solution needed to be suitable for large corporates as well as SMEs and local community organisations.  The system had to be intuitive and contain some environmental management training and presentations to support organisations just starting out on their measuring journey.  The system should then be able to consolidate all the inputted data and provide WECC with the reporting against the targets they had set.

The Benefits

We worked closely with Forum for the Future to provide easy to use software and services for members, and to provide automated monitoring and reporting against targets. WECC was able to support over 100 local companies with a free software solution, advice, tools, training and practical support to measure, manage and reduce their CO2 emissions.

All companies involved have been able to demonstrate reductions in energy use and their water and carbon footprint, many of them are also seeing reductions in business travel and overall business costs.

Words from WECC

"SustainIt have demonstrated real corporate social responsibility in the way that they have delivered this solution for local businesses."

Simon Billing, Sustainability Advisor, WECC
